BOTOX®

Botox® is the leading medical cosmetic procedure in the world and has the highest patient satisfaction rating of any med-aesthetic procedure. Botox® smoothes and tightens areas on the forehead, the space between the eyes and even the crow’s feet. It lends a youthful appearance to the face without changing the face’s basic features. The product breaks down slowly (approximately 3-6 months) in the body, and the area gradually regains mobility and function.

Botox® is quite safe-it has been used to treat moderate to serious frown lines since 2002-and Botox is currently being used medically in much higher doses than those which we would place in even the most wrinkled of foreheads.

But remember that Botox® is a drug so it must be administered by specially trained doctors and nurses. Just as importantly, remember that because its effects are cosmetic, Botox® should be given by a professional who will take the time to work with you so that you get results that you want.

Most recently Botox® has been FDA cleared for use in cases of excessive perspiration technically known as hyperhydrosis. Hyperdrosis is relieved as Botox decreases the sweating mechanism. This procedure is a bit more involved and requires a topical anesthetic agent and quite a few injections but it is an extremely effective solution for this embarrassing condition.

RESTYLANE®/RADIESSE®

Restylane and Radiesse belong to a group of products called dermal fillers which restore volume and fullness to skin, the face in particular. The right fillers can create some beautiful looks and turn back the clock by years in minutes, and without surgery.  Until only 2 years ago, the only filler on the market was collagen which although collagen has some admiral qualities it didn’t last long (2 months on average), required skin testing 30 days before injection, and was very expensive because of it’s short life in the skin.

Then just a few years ago, Restylane was FDA-approved for treatment of the lines that run from the nose to the mouth (called nasolabial folds), and the world hasn’t been the same since. Restylane, working off the popularity of Botox, quickly became THE cosmetic treatment-to-try for women throughout the US. (Restylane was already being widely used in other countries around the world.) Restylane lasts longer than collagen (4-6 months on average), doesn’t require a skin test prior to injection, and so is currently the treatment of choice for volumizing facial lines and lips in the US, although as new products become available, this may change.

Restylane is made from a non-animal-based hyaluronic acid.  Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance that already exists within the human body.  Its function: (You guessed it) to plump up skin, tissue, even joints. Restylane generally lasts from 4-6 months-depending on where it is placed in the face. Restylane placed in areas of less movement tends to last longer than in areas of more movement (like the lips).

Radiesse is a FDA approved product which is currently being used to volumize many areas of the face other than the lips. Radiesse is thicker than Restylane so it works better on deep lines and wrinkles, and it lasts 10-12 months!  Radiesse is also being used in many of the newer applications for fillers such as creating cheeks, and filling in hollows on jaw lines.  The company, Bioform, offers excellent support and training making Radiesse a product which we feel very comfortable using on our patients. It is currently being used off-label as it awaits its FDA approval for the treatment as facial lines.  It has been used safely for the past 3 years by many doctors, and so has acquired a track record that indicates a high degree of safety. 

All Fillers are also classified as drugs so, like Botox, they require administration by medical personnel who have been trained in the procedure.  Great results with fillers also require practitioner experience and an artistic eye. Expect to spend some time with your first session as we will go back and forth with product and a mirror until we have created the look YOU want.
